The genetic code, which life uses to translate the language of genes into the language "spoken" by proteins and entire cellular factories, is at the heart of molecular biology. It enables cells to function, from the simplest bacteria to the neurons in our brains. It is common to almost all living organisms. The word "almost" is important. Where do the rare deviations from this code come from? What do they tell us about the evolution of life on Earth, and how can we use them? Today, we can even mimic evolution and create artificial genetic codes. What can they bring to humanity? And should we even be doing this?
