The project aims to develop a combination drug-device solution to non-invasively enhance alertness without causing side effects such as anxiety, irritability, or euphoria, and with reduced addictive potential. A key focus is the development of photoswitchable dextroamphetamine (“PhotoDex”) molecules, which remain biologically inert in the dark and are reversibly activated by near-infrared (NIR) light (750–900 nm), enabling precise, controlled stimulation of alertness.
