Vegetation of the Altai and West Sayan Mts is perhaps the closest modern analogy to Central European vegetation of Late-glacial and Early Holocene. Understanding landscape-level relationships of this vegetation to environment may be crucial for interpretation of Central European vegetation history. Gradient analysis of vegetation and flora in selected landscape types of these mountains, notably with respect to continentality gradient, will be carried out, and supplemented with phytosociological description. Special attention will be given to ecotones forest-steppe and steppe-tundra. Ecological requirements of selected species will be identified and compared with their requirements in Central Europe. Modern pollen spectra will be analysed in each landscape subjected to vegetation analysis. These spectra will be compared with Early Postglacial spectra from Central Europe and used for interpretation of vegetation and landscape history of Central Europe.
