The academic year officially began on September 15. However, the campus launch wouldn’t be complete without the now-traditional Deans’ Barbecue. This event brings together faculty leadership – including soon-to-join pharmaceutical faculty – and students in an informal atmosphere, with good food, drinks, music, and various leisure activities.
In fact, students themselves help shape what the event looks like, thanks to their involvement in organizing it. Part of the program includes a puzzle game with prizes, as well as – metaphorically speaking – the “grilling” referenced in the event’s name. Deans answer questions submitted by students through an online form. More serious questions – such as those regarding campus renovations – mix with more personal, sometimes very direct ones. As Jan Cacek, Dean of the Faculty of Sports Studies, cleverly demonstrated: “I’d say my BMI and the campus have one thing in common – they’re both growing.”
The event, regularly attended by Masaryk University’s Rector, Martin Bareš, drew hundreds of students – including many international students and first-years. For the latter, the Deans’ Barbecue offers not only a chance to join student organizations, but also a friendly introduction to campus academic life, which is known for its open and welcoming atmosphere. As the presence of several alumni showed, this is an atmosphere that fosters lifelong connections.
